God, Why Don't You Hear Their Prayer?

Paragraphs--He is Here--by Rachel

Women must deal with co-wives and often exist within the same household. They are subjected to the will of their husband, moving from wife to wife as he pleases.

As I interviewed women, most of whom were widows, I came to realize the widows of Uganda are in crisis. Husbands are dying of HIV/AIDS and are leaving behind multiple wives and children. In this culture of polygamy, women stand by in fear as their co-wives suffer and die of AIDS--knowing they will be next--praying they won't. They are not only left with their own children to raise but the children of their co-wives. Children are starving at home and take to the streets hoping they will at least find something to eat.

Small children are left to their own devices as their mothers struggle to survive. Some women resort to prostitution. Some widows sell their children for sex for as little as a bar of soap. Some commit suicide. Others wonder if they should poison their children and then themselves. . . Or would the children be better off if they ran away. . . Rejected by family and community, they are convinced God has forgotten them.
